Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

·         The company that distributes a film has a massive impact on how well the film becomes and how successful its grossing rate is. For example, if we were to use a distribution company such as Paramount or 20th Century Fox, the chances of our film becoming widely popular and successful are much higher than if we were to go with an independent company such as Film4 or Vertigo Films. However many crime/ mystery films that have been distributed by independent companies have still becomes huge successes and therefore we could use both. Our assigned project that we have filmed and edited is an opening sequence and in which, we chose the genre of Film Noir. For our distribution company, we wanted one that has already distributed at least one Film Noir movie or has distributed a crime/mystery film. Therefore when choosing one, we wanted one like Paramount Pictures because they distributed the film Sunset Boulevard which was one of the most famous and successful Film Noir movies. Another ultimate distribution company would be Warner Brothers; this is due to the fact that they distributed the Film Noir movie ‘The Big Sleep’, which again was one of the most famous film noir movies. Also, Warner Bros distributed the Sherlock Holmes films which are fairly recent and were huge successes. Using both companies would help as well with the advertising of the film. For example, we could use the three stages of posters to advertise and make our audience aware of our film. We would also use YouTube to release a trailer of the film.

Target audience feedback on roughcut:

Target audience feedback on rough cut:

I questioned a member of y target audience on the opening sequence rough cut, this was to gather highlights on the opening sequence, criticism  and how to improve the final product. The feedback that was given was useful to me because it allowed me and my group to correct any mistakes that there may be.

  1. Is the genre clear from the rough cut? Yes, the genre is clear from the rough cut. I can tell that the film's genre is Film Noir as the film is black and white and the Mise-en-scene fits the genre.
  2. Is the sound of good quality? The music sounds good quality but the dialogue between the two characters when they speak is very poor; the music is too loud over their conversation so you can't hear it.
  3. How could my rough cut be improved? The sound could be improved, to be specific the music needs to be made quieter when the conversation starts so the characters' dialogue can be heard.
  4. Does the Mise-en-scene fit the genre? The Mise-en-scene is really good at portraying the genre of the opening sequence, the only things I would point out is that the trainers do not fit the genre but also I think the costumes aren't as appropriate as they could be, in particular the guy's clothing isn't very 1940's.
  5. Would you re-watch? Yes, I would 100% re-watch this opening sequence, I'd love to see it when it's finished because I am really interested to find out what happens.
  6. What is good about our rough cut? I think you've done a really good job with lighting the shots at night and great match on action.
  7. Is the plot of the film clear from the opening sequence? I think that the opening sequence is really good in terms of the narrative, as a viewer you get a feel of the plot but it's not obvious which is good because it makes the audience want to see the whole film.
  8.  How do you feel about the transitions? The transitions used are appropriate but I feel like there could be more, there are some glitchy transitions that need to be corrected.
  9. How do you feel about titles? There are no titles in it so far so I think you should put some.
  10. Do you like our logo? Yes, the logo is really unique and fits the genre perfectly.

Rough Cut feedback:

Rough cute feedback:

Today in our lesson, every group presented to the class, their rough cuts of their opening sequences. Each group was given a sheet that was used to contribute feedback for each group's opening sequence.

The positives of our groups opening sequence was the following:
  • Managed to achieve acceptable lighting even though it is in black & white, which therefore achieves the genre.
  • The camera and angles were good.
  • The opening sequence, flows and follows well, which therefore makes it more clear to the audience what is going on.
  • The mise-en-scene was creative and appropriate to the genre.
  • The other groups, all agreed that the story line is intriguing.
  • There was good use of match on action which is key with the opening sequence.
Negatives and what to improve on:

  • Add some music to the opening sequence and the titles to the beginning.
  • Make the story a little bit more clear to the audience, this will help their understanding.
  • Try and cut down the intro, as it was a little too long, this will ensure that the audience is not bored.
  • The dialogue was too quiet, therefore try and improve sound, this will help the audience understand what is happening.

Out of the five groups that are in our media class, four of them said that they would like to watch the whole opening sequence to see what else happens and to reveal the rest of the story.

Diary entry: 4

Filming session: 4

Today was our fifth and final session of filming. We all met up and started around five o'clock, we then finished roughly around eight o'clock. Today's session was successful and productive because we were able to shoot the murder scene, select the music and sounds that we wanted for the back, and were also able to film the rest of the beginning of the opening sequence. Although we changed the beginning of the opening sequence, it was still successful and we all agreed that it was better than the original idea. Today's shots were all filmed indoors, which not only was convenient because it saved us time with setting up the lighting kit, but also it was raining and therefore saved us from being cold and soaked. Overall today was productive and a satisfying end to our sessions of filming.
