A Extreme Long shot is used emphasize the background or context of a certain piece of context. A Extreme long shot helps with the belief of the audience especially if the film is sifi or fictional. 

If a Extreme long shot is used with people or just one person in it, the person may not be as visible as if they were in a Mid shot, therefore if they are featured or filmed in one they will just about be visible. For example:
